Twilight Zone: Playfield Installation

Restored in 2017. This Twilight Zone playfield appeared to be in good shape until I realized that someone had used a large screw that had broken through the playfield’s surface! Instead of trying to fix it, I decided to install a reproduction playfield. Doing a playfield swap on a game like Twilight Zone was going to be a challenge, but after some fine tuning, it played beautifully!

You can see how many of the metal parts start to oxidize and rust, on a high level restoration ALL these metal parts will need to be taken apart and de-rusted or replaced.

The metal on the bottom side will also need to be cleaned, the method varies depending on the part. Some will be soaked in rust removal chemicals, some cleaned by hand, some will be polished in a media tumbler, but all will be sprayed with a light coat of clearcoat to protect from rusting again in the future.
Here we are with most of the parts on the bottom side taken off. Many pictures are taken to make sure everything goes back where it should and the parts are bagged and labeled.
The mini playfield will be replaced with a new one, like the main playfield, all the parts must be cleaned, polished or replaced before this will be installed in the game.
Metal parts like this can take quite a bit of time to make it look good.
Some parts seem to rust worse than others depending on the type of metal used.
These parts must be disassembled, some of the parts are replaced and the colored wrappers are cleaned or replaced.
The old ramp will be thrown out and replaced with a brand new one. Some of the parts will be saved and transferred over.

Fresh clearcoat on the playfield provides a beautiful shine.
Twilight Zone is jammed pack with features. Seeing everything freshly cleaned is pure joy.
Even the black wood oak rails are replaced with brand new exact replacements.

Even the back of the machine was given special attention!

As always, the inside of the cabinet is cleaned and cared for as well.
